Shaftesbury School, Dorset

It's all systems go at Shaftesbury School as another WP successful bid provides vital funding for much-needed improvements

A successful bid for funding can turn a dream into reality and that is exactly the case for Shaftesbury School in North Dorset, who were awarded a DCSF grant of £2,900,000 following a successful grant application. However, rather than entering the minefield of funding opportunities and bid writing themselves, they chose a company with a 75% success rate in winning government funding to help them every step of the way. That company is Hampshire-based Wessex Partnerships (WP).

WP has worked within a variety of industry sectors and its client base includes a range of publicly funded agencies, local authorities, education institutions and private companies. Each challenge is looked at on an individual basis and clients are able to provide as much or indeed as little advice as is needed.

The original goal at Shaftesbury School was to significantly expand boarding provision, improve standards and diversify services. Following consultation with WP, this vision was broadened further and a detailed Business Plan and funding application produced portraying the agreed wider long terms aims and objectives of the school.

Andy Thompson, Director of Boarding, was delighted with the outcome and wrote to the team at WP: “May I, on behalf of everyone at Shaftesbury School, thank you for the huge effort you invested in the plan. The success will transform the lives of many young people for years to come, and they and we are indebted to you.”

The transformation, which is anticipated will commence in August 2009, will include a new purpose-built sixth form block comprising 24 single en suite study rooms together with staff accommodation. In addition there will be a major refurbishment and expansion of the current building to create a learning resource centre, more social study space, a large dining facility and a state of the art kitchen. The new facility is due to be ready by September 2010.

The school hopes that the new facility will continue to attract students from all over the world and build on the international reputation and global perspectives within the school. Shaftesbury School is the only state boarding facility in Dorset and currently attracts students from seventeen different countries.

WP is a recognised expert in identifying and securing public funding for social and economic projects and helping to manage those projects. The company has provided consulting and advisory services (from a range of UK and European sources) to its clients to write successful bids and gain additional funding to enhance or extend vital service provision.

WP’s experience of writing successful bids over the last 10 years has led to more than 100 projects being funded from various UK and European sources totalling in excess of £40m.
